Embracing Self Care: A Journey of Prioritizing Me-Time

As a mother to two amazing girls, aged 12 and 16, I must admit that self-care didn’t always come naturally to me. However, over the years, I’ve come to realize that simple self-care practices are not just a luxury but a necessity for our overall well-being. With July 24 being International Self Care Day, it serves as a reminder that self-care should be an active part of our lives 24/7, seven days a week, for ourselves and our communities.

Here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate self-care into my daily routine:

Gratitude Walks

I start most days with early morning walks alongside my husband and our dogs, taking in the beauty of nature and showing gratitude for the little things it offers. Whether it’s a heart-shaped leaf, a unique rock, or a captivating cloud formation, these simple sights remind me to appreciate life beyond my daily challenges.

Mindful Eating

Previously, convenience dominated my food choices due to the demands of being a working mom. However, I now prioritize nourishing myself with healthy foods. A favorite treat is the Green Apple Kale Drink from Morning Story in Marion – a refreshing blend of fresh kale, cucumber, apples, and lemons, packed with nutrients.

Weight Training

Engaging in regular weight training has become quintessential to my self-care routine. It not only keeps my bones strong as I age but also improves my sleep and cardiovascular health. Alison Graham has been a positive influence on my health journey, providing valuable guidance and support at PowHERful Impact Training.

Continuous Learning

I believe in the power of knowledge and regularly listen to podcasts by experts and passionate individuals in their respective fields. One of my favorites is Mel Robbins, author of “The 5 Second Rule” and “High 5 Habit,” who inspires and fuels my mind, countering the negativity around me.

Whole Body Wellness

My visits to Revive Family Chiropractic have been transformative for my overall well-being. Dr. Alex and his staff provide exceptional care that addresses my sleep, stress, range of motion, and flexibility.

Scheduled Mommy Time

Traditional self-care, like getting a massage or treatment, is equally essential. I love the anticipation of my appointments at Ritual Med Spa in Cedar Rapids; where I am warmly welcomed and pampered in a tranquil atmosphere. Trusting their medical-grade skin care, I rely on ZO Skin Health products, like the Smart Tone Broad-Spectrum SPF 50, for my daily sunscreen. Embracing self-care is a journey that benefits not just our minds but our bodies as well. Our brain’s reticular activating system helps filter what’s essential to us, and by actively participating in self-care, we train our brains to recognize its significance. Operating at the brain stem, it sends positive signals throughout our bodies, proactively promoting overall well-being.

I hope the handful of self-care practices I’ve shared inspire you to find ways to incorporate self-care into your life as well. Remember, taking time for yourself is not selfish; it’s an investment in your own happiness and the ability to be there for your loved ones.

Wishing you a joyous International Self-Care Day filled with love and self-nurturing!
