Going Back to School as a Mom

“Don’t be nervous!”

“Everything will be ok.”

“I know you can do this!”

You have probably said one of these things to your children on the first day of school. Now the roles are reversed and YOU are the one going back to school and have many people cheering you on!

Going Back to School as a Mom: 7 Tips to Help You Be Successful

I have been in your shoes and was very nervous about going back to school, while working full-time and being a mom. I was able to find support in my friends and family who made the process easier. After talking with them, we came up with these tips that will make going back to school as a mom just a bit easier.

1. Plan ahead.

When you first get your syllabus, look ahead at all the due dates for the class and write them on a calendar. Check this calendar at the beginning of every week. This will help you know what you need to work on for the week and start preparing for long-term assignments.

2. Set a time to work on coursework.

Having a planned “Homework Time” will help you and your family organize your time better. This might mean coming early or staying late at class to get some things done or using one night a week after the kids go to bed to complete assignments. This allows you to enjoy your week without worrying about when you will work on coursework. In my experience, it works best to plan your “Homework Time” for the beginning of the week.

3. If possible, work ahead.

When you plan ahead (see how handy that is!) you are able to see when your personal life and school life overlap.  We also have to remember that life happens, so if there is a reason you can’t work on assignments at your regular scheduled time, you don’t have to stress about it.

4. Get familiar with technology.

Some classes utilize a lot of (new) technology and there can be a learning curve. To ease anxiety, play around with it before your assignments are due, so you feel comfortable using it when the time comes.  *Bonus if you use your weekly time for this!

5. Enlist support

You can’t do it all. Every mom needs support, but those going back to school can use a bit more.  Asking family members and friends to watch the kids when needed or your partner to help more around the house can be a lifesaver. Don’t be afraid to reach out when you need something!

6. Give yourself some grace.

You are doing a lot right now, mama! You aren’t Super Woman, so there may be nights of pizza delivery or weeks the house seems like a mess. You are doing the best you can while juggling classes and a family.

7. Remember your Why.

When the balance of family and classes gets tough (and it might!) remember why you started in the first place. This will help push you through and make it all worth it in the end!

So take a second to think these tips over and make a plan for yourself.  You can tackle these classes and remember:
