Tips for Remembering Your Child’s Voice

It’s no secret that our momma’s hearts are in a constant struggle of “Stay young,” and “Hurry and grow up, will ya?” I am not immune to that struggle. I would gladly throw out every diaper, never to return to this house again. All the while, I am still praying, please stay young enough to think of your toes as the best snack you’ve ever had.

Watching my kids grow up tugs at my heart strings SO much!

I want to preserve all the moments of my littles’ childhoods. Most of the time, that means pictures. Scrolling through picture after picture I realized one day, images alone do not always give the full rich picture of who my children are. Don’t get me wrong, I cherish the photos of my kiddos like a precious treasure, but I want more…so much more.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and I want them both!

Tips for Remembering Your Child's Voice

I want their pictures and their words, so how do I preserve my child’s voice?

One of simple joys of motherhood are those sweet little nuggets that pop out of our little one’s mouth. The funny way they mispronounce words, their quirky little questions, you know…those odd statements that sometimes just spring forth. I love them all and I want to find a way to preserve all those sweet treasures. I want to remember my child’s voice. This was epically important for me to do for my young daughters. I want my girls to know that they have always been more than just a pretty picture.

I can save their sweet little voices, right?

Once I made the commitment to preserve my children’s sweet words, I decided that as soon as I heard something that the kids said that spoke to my heart I would instantly write it down. For me, the most convenient way to do this is to write down these little nuggets in my phone’s note section. To state that a mom’s life is busy is a huge understatement, so remembering to write these statements down right away is key!

Now that these sweet saying are in vault, how do I preserve them?

The first step I took was to decide on a consistent media, an easy go-to way to document their sayings that I don’t have to spend a lot of time over thinking each time a had a great quote. Using a letter board and creating a book of their words felt like the perfect choice. I start by write out each treasured quote on my letter board. Once the quote is written out, I place it on a white display board and take a picture. This can be as easy as using your cell phone! After I have taken all of my photos, I used ChatBooks to print my photos into a book. There is no pressure to find and photograph their funny little blurbs. I just take them as they come, as raw and true as the children offer them up. In the end I have a more vivid “picture” of the little person behind those eyes in all of my photos.

Tips for Remembering Your Child's Voice

I will always have a tight death grip on my children’s childhood. Knowing that I am able to preserve their uniqueness, their individual spirit, gives my momma heart such comfort. My momma brain also gets a little break from trying to remember every little moment.
