Friendship Makes Life More Beautiful: A Tribute to My Girlfriends

“A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.”  – Bernard Meltzer

In honor of ‘National Girlfriends Day’ which was on August 1st…this one’s for the girls!

Friendship Makes Life More Beautiful: A Tribute to My Girlfriends

The definition of what makes a true friend differs from person to person.  And friendships may fall into many different categories.  While many friends grow up together and have continued to remain close, others may have met through work or in some other way and developed their bond later in life.

No matter how these relationships began one thing remains the same; friendship is one of the most special connections there is.

As you grow up you realize that a few loyal friends are worth more than a thousand fake ones.  You get to a point where it doesn’t matter how many friends you have on Facebook anymore or how many numbers you have in your cell phone.  All that matters are the ones you want to share what happens in your life with, both the good and the bad.  The ones you know you can always count on, and they can always count on you.

Being able to confide in someone safely, to trust them, and feel accepted by them is something special.  If you can find a group of girls who are supportive, kind, and love you for who you are, hold on to them.

These are the girls who listen to you and respect you, even though they may not always agree with you.

The girls who are there for you when life is not so kind.  The ones who listen while you cry or scream because you feel as though your world is crashing down, and somehow they still make you feel like everything is going to be okay.

When times are tough, these are the girls that will let you vent it out.  And when you’re done, they will offer up the support you need to help you get through it.

These are the girls you can take a trip with and years later still reminisce about how amazing that trip was and how much fun you all had together.

These are the girls that don’t have time for the drama.

When living through a crisis and having to make some of the toughest decisions you feel you’ve ever had to make, these are the girls who listen to each other while offering advice and guidance.

When you start a family, these are the girls you want your kids to grow up knowing. Because if something ever happened and you needed their help, you know they’ll treat your kids like they are their own.

Don’t neglect these special friends.

Let them know just how much they mean to you and how important they are in your life.  We need to make an effort, no matter how busy our lives are, to find ways to keep these connections strong.

Girlfriends like these just make life better. Fuller.  More complete.  They encourage and strengthen who we are. Because that’s what friends are for.

“Keep smiling, keep shining.  Knowing you can always count on me, for sure.  That’s what friends are for.  For good times and bad times, I’ll be on your side forevermore. That’s what friends are for.”  – Kurt Bacarach/Carole Bayer Sager
