Reading Nook: October Edition

CR Moms Reading Nook: October Edition

book fall leaves coffee

In the words of Anne Shirley: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” As the days get cooler, what a perfect time to snuggle up with a good book! Here’s a few we’ve been reading at our house:

Littles

Baby’s Firsts by Nancy Raines Day. My sweet baby was born last October. I can’t believe he’s one already. This book hit me right in the feels going through all of the firsts a new baby experiences in a lovely rhyming text. The illustrations by Michael Emberly are diverse and playful.

Middles

My preschooler and first grader have been getting a kick out of two books I checked out from the library by Corey R. Tabor, Mel Fell and Snail Crossing. Tabor is the author and illustrator and both of these stories are whimsical tales of animals overcoming obstacles, with a big dash of giggles thrown in.

We also recently finished reading Beverly Cleary’s classic, The Mouse and the Motorcycle. I had actually never read this one, but I adored her Ramona books. I was delighted just as much as my kids were by Ralph S. Mouse and his need for speed and I’m sure we will be reading the sequels soon.

Mamas

I just finished How to Keep House While Drowning by K.C. Davis, which is all about how to have self compassion and reframe domestic tasks as morally neutral.

Real talk, I have never been a tidy person. My poor mom, who is very neat, was constantly dismayed by my room growing up. Now I have a whole house and tiny humans who are constantly adding to the chaos. I am so thankful I found K.C. Davis on TikTok one day, and she has shifted my perspective. So, rather than cleaning out of shame, and spiraling and feeling like a failure when I can’t keep up–I am learning to see housekeeping as something that helps me and my family function, but not as a test of my value. I highly recommend this book and the rest of Davis’s oeuvre to anyone who doesn’t feel like they’ve got it all together. Be kind to future you and check it out.
