Are you hoping to find some walking trails? Maybe you want to take your kids fishing? Have they been begging to go to a beach and build some sand castles? Or maybe you just want to take in some beautiful scenery. The good news is that ALL of this can be done at Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area. It’s located just a little ways outside of Cedar Rapids in Palo.

Why we love visiting Pleasant Creek:
-The beach! My youngest son LOVES digging in the sand and looking for creatures. He has been asking to go to the ocean all summer. Fortunately, the beach at Pleasant Creek has satisfied him for now. The kids can swim (at your own risk, no lifeguards are on duty!), or just dig around in the sand and build some castles. There is also a lot of trees and shade in the back to set down your stuff so it doesn’t get too hot.
-The beauty. I love coming to Pleasant Creek just to look around. I really think it is one of the prettiest places in the area.
-Trails to walk on (or bike/horseback riding if you’re into that). There are over 8 miles of trails through out the recreational area.
-Great spot for a picnic. There are plenty of picnic tables throughout the area and some shelters you can use or just bring a blanket and set up along the lake to enjoy the scenery while you eat.
-It’s easy to get to being only about 10 miles outside of Cedar Rapids, but you still feel like you got out of the city and are immersed in nature.
Things to Know when visiting Pleasant Creek:
-It is a “carry in, carry out” park, bring garbage bag to collect any trash you might have.
-There are camping spots and a couple of cabins if you want to stay for a few days! You can reserve spots here.
-If you like fishing, there are several fishing jetties along the shoreline to walk onto and try to catch some bass.
-Boats are also welcome on the lake, they just need to be operated at a “no wake” speed. Some people even kayak, canoe or snorkel in the lake.
