Spread Love, Not COVID: Celebrating Valentine’s Day From Home

We’re on eleven months of quarantine and social distancing now, with no clear end in sight. I think most of us are getting a little COVID-fatigued. I’ve honestly never been a big fan of Valentine’s Day, but lately, I find myself latching on to any excuse to celebrate. Don’t get me wrong– I’m all about showing love and sharing gifts. I just think expectations around the holiday can get a little carried away.

Maybe we can use this opportunity to look past all the hype and commercialism and find simple ways to express love and strengthen our relationships.

Here are a few fresh ideas to celebrate Valentine’s Day from home:

Spread Love, Not COVID: Celebrating Valentine's Day From Home
  1. Look up dance lessons on Youtube.

Whether you have two left feet or the skill of a Broadway performer, you can find something to match your ability. Slide the furniture out of the way, kick your shoes off, and get your moves on!

2. Paint night!

Look up some Bob Ross videos and get to it! By the end of the night, you’ll be feeling like a happy little sunset. Not into Bob Ross? Try an at-home-paint kit or get a coloring book and some freshly sharpened pencils.

3. Eat breakfast in bed for dinner and watch cartoons from your childhood.

You can go all out with crepes or omelets, or keep it simple with frozen waffles and orange juice.

4. Cook a new meal together.

Find a fancy jar of pesto or marinara sauce with a recipe on the back. Buy all the ingredients and cook it up together. Who knows, maybe it will become your new favorite dinner to make!

5. Check out comic books from the library

Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, Pearls Before Swine, or The Far Side are just a few of my favorites. Build a blanket fort in the family room and snuggle up and read together. Don’t forget some yummy finger foods and your favorite beverage.

6. Try a virtual gourmet tasting kit-

Chocolate, cheese, cookies, olive oil, artisan breads–whatever you fancy, buy a fancy kit and give it your best critique. This is also a great opportunity to support local businesses!

Remember that a little preparation can go a long way when celebrating Valentine’s Day from home. We’re all living through a pandemic right now, so go easy on yourself. Make it a fun day of love without the stress of expectations!
