My children love to hunt Easter eggs. Watching littles toddle around searching for eggs and seeing their faces light up when they find one is certainly a joy! While egg hunts can be kept simple, you can also get creative or try something new. Here are 11 tips and ideas for your Easter egg hunt this year. Which one are you going to try?
Tips and Ideas for Planning an Egg Hunt
Hide empty eggs around the house to “practice”
This is a great way to keep your kids entertained in the weeks leading up to Easter. You can either hide the eggs for them, or older children may be able to take turns hiding eggs for each other. Pro tip: count the eggs before you hide them to make sure all are found, or you may discover eggs months later when you’re deep cleaning. Not that I speak from experience or anything…
Have an egg scavenger hunt to lead your kids to their Easter baskets
Give them an egg with a clue to start, and then each clue will lead them to the next egg, and eventually to their baskets! (these clues can certainly be provided by the Easter Bunny). Etsy sells clues that you can download and print yourself! You could also put the pieces of the Easter story in each egg so that they can read the Easter story as they hunt.
If you have kids of varying ages, have each kid search for specific colors
That way, the big kids don’t grab all the easy finds for littles. You can also put age appropriate treats and prizes in the eggs.
Fill the eggs with puzzle pieces
Have the kids work together to assemble the puzzle after they find the eggs.
Buy pre filled eggs
Many stores sell them. This will save time if you don’t have time to fill the eggs yourself.
Allergy Awareness
If you’re hosting children other than your own for a hunt, make sure you are aware of any allergies and plan accordingly.
Avoid having lots of candy
If you don’t want to have a plethora of candy, hide tickets or tokens inside the eggs. Once the kids find their eggs they can use their tokens to “buy” small prizes (coloring books, playdoh, chalk, bubbles, etc).
Think about pets
If you have dogs, make sure they are kept out of the egg hunting area until all the eggs are collected. This will ensure the don’t eat something that could make them sick.
Go green!
Don’t throw out the plastic eggs when they have been emptied of their prizes. Save them future hunts, or repurpose them into a fun Easter wreath by gluing them to a plain wreath. If you don’t have eggs, ask family or friends for some before you purchase new.
Hunting does not just have to be for the kids…
Have a beer or wine hunt for the adults! Get 6 packs of beer, seltzer, and small bottles/cans of wine. Give each adult an empty 6 pack container to fill. This can be a fun activity for adult siblings/siblings in laws at family gatherings and a fun way to try new beverages!
Plan Ahead
Finally, given the supply chain issues we continue to face, don’t procrastinate! Plan and purchase supplies ahead. This will save you the stress of scrambling at the last minute when stores may be sold out.
