I’m coming to your house for a play date today.
Or I’m meeting you for coffee.
And I’m SO looking forward to it. Truly.
I can’t wait to connect over a latte or chat while our kiddos play in your adorable play room.
We have a lot to catch up on and I know our time together is overdue. I also know that we may get interrupted a dozen times, but could I make a request?
I’m a little nervous to share this preference with you, my dear friend. I’m a little hesitant to make a request on behalf of mamas everywhere. Let’s give an intentional look at our conversation today.
However, let me be clear. I love talking about my kids. I love hearing about yours. I desperately need your advice on nursing, my picky eater and the best schools. But I also need something else today…to be seen and known and heard as a woman.
You do too, don’t you?
Oh, I know it’s hard. I am so tempted to stick only to the topic of my day job as mama. To cover everything that has to do with our little ones.
But when I look up past my latte and the toys in this playroom, I see you and this imbalance in our time together. Because you, my dear, have dreams. You have dreams, and goals, and relationship struggles. You have a new insight, or a thought you’ve been afraid to say out loud. You’re wrestling an illness, or a fear. You have exciting news, a promotion at your job, or you’re looking for a space to process. Today, and from now on, I’m promising to be willing to go into all of those spaces with you.
Because it matters.
It matters that we don’t lose ourselves in motherhood. It matters that we see each other in all of our many roles…friend, wife, daughter, employee, human being.
I want to hear your dreams and encourage them because I just bet that your kids will benefit greatly from having a mom who cares for herself and pursues the things she’s passionate about.
And, yes, my friend – I love these kids of ours. I can barely wait to ask you if her snot is normal, if you have any tips on potty training, and watch them all grow up together.
Mothering is certainly the focal point of our lifestyle right now, there’s no denying that. I don’t want to. I just want to commit to creating a space where we don’t lose track of each other as women, as people, along the way.
Thank you, friend.
Thank you for the coffee. Thank you for letting my children tear apart that adorable play room of yours. Thank you for letting me into your world, into the world where there’s more to you than being a mama. Into a place where as we pursue each other just a tad bit better, and our babies will flourish more too. Thank You.
