At Home Derma-Rolling: Is this Latest Craze Friend or Foe?

In this world driven by social media, we are constantly being bombarded by the latest and greatest trends, and the beauty world is no stranger to being trendy. Whether it is professional treatments or at home remedies, we are all left wondering, do they really work?  And more over…are they worth all that money?

So what is the newest trent that I just had to try?

Let me start by clearing stating that I am not a dermatologist, nor do I have any professional medical training.  This is only a retelling of my own personal experiences. You should always check with your doctor before trying any treatments.

So, what exactly is derma-rolling?

Derma-rolling is the process of using a derma-roller to cause tiny puncture wounds to the top layer of skin, triggering the skin to repair.  A derma roller looks like a mini paint roller with fine metal needles covering the drum. Rollers come in a variety of needle length, starting at .25 mm and going all the way up to 2.5 mm.  The concept of derma-rolling is simple really. Roll the tiny spiked drum over your face, covering your face with mini puncher holes. Voila, you’re are done. You now have the same silky smooth skin of a baby…right?

Why in the world would anyone want to aerate their face like the front lawn?

Derma-rolling boasts of reducing scars and wrinkles, increasing collagen production, and smoothing out the skin’s appearance. The derma-roller also claims to allow all those expensive creams and serums that you buy to penetrate more deeply, providing more of an impact to the skin. All in all, derma rollers claim an overall rejuvenation effect. Sounds great! You’re in, right?

What is my process?

Okay, so this is how I roll. I begin with removing all of my makeup and washing my face, thoroughly! With those hundreds of mini stab wounds to my face, I want to reduce any chance of irritation or infection. After my face is squeaky clean, I take the clean derma-roller (I use a roller with 25 mm length needles) and roll it over my entire face starting with my forehead and working down. When rolling, I only apply light pressure in a criss cross pattern while taking care to give extra attention when working on my problems areas. Yup, you guessed it, my wrinkles. I use the derma-roller 2 times a week to start with. The packaging recommended no more than 3 times a week, and cutting back to once a week if any noticeable irritation appears.

Does it hurt?

I wouldn’t say that micro-needling hurts. I would more closing describe it as a slightly prickly irritation.

Are all those pricks worth the pain?

Like Ponce de Leon, I was all about finding my very own fountain of youth. I have been using a derma roller for a month now. Although I have not seen a noticeable effect on those deep 11s that seem to be preeminently etched in between my noes, I have noticed a drastic change in the overall texture of my skin. My lower jaw and chin has always had a bumpy texture. After using the derma-roller, I now notice much smooth skin.

This is one trendy trend I’m glad that I jumped on board with.

So are you ready to jump on the band wagon and make the derma-roller your new BFF?
