Tis the season for unhealthy Halloween treats. From pumpkin-spiced everything to Halloween parties to the 7th bag of mixed candy that I picked up from the grocery store that I swear is for the trick-or-treaters this time. There’s sugar everywhere we turn, and our kids are about to come home with a massive candy haul on Halloween night.
So, I’ve rounded up some healthy, delicious, and EASY Halloween treats that you can feel good about giving to your little monsters!
Banana Ghost Pops
Popsicle stick or paper straw
Simply peel and cut a banana in half. Then, stick a popsicle stick or a paper straw into the banana. I used chocolate chips for eyes and a raisin for the mouth. If you’d like to avoid using chocolate chips, I’ve also cut a raisin in half and used the two halves as eyes. With this banana ghost pop I just pressed the chocolate chips and raisin into the banana. If you’re having trouble getting them to stick, use a little peanut butter or honey if you have older children. A fun Halloween treat for all!
Warty Witch Guacamole
Black tortilla chips
Spread guacamole on a plate and shape it into a face. Once you have the face shape you like, begin using black tortilla chips for the witch’s hat. I found black bean tortilla chips, but the blue corn tortilla chips would work also. You can change the ingredients for the facial features depending on what you have on hand or for taste preferences. I used shredded cheese for hair, olives for the witch’s eyes, a pickle for the warty nose, and baby carrots for the mouth.
Creepy spider PB & J Sliders
Make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as you normally would. Then, use a cookie cutter or a cup to cut the sandwich into a circle. Stick pretzel sticks on either side of the circle for the creepy crawly legs. Finish up the sliders by placing the chocolate chips where you would like the eyes. This Halloween treat can be substituted for sunflower butter, too.
Black tortilla chips
To start, cut the cheese into half-inch cubes. Take one point of the tortilla chip and stick it into one side of the cheese cube and do the same on the opposite side to create the wings. Use raisins for the eyes.
Toilet paper or white streamers
Stickers or Sharpie
Grab your favorite snack pouch and wrap with toilet paper or white streamers to create a mummy-like wrap. Then, make whatever face you’d like. You can use stickers or a Sharpie, like I did.
Your favorite green smoothie
Clear drinking class
Dry Erase Marker
First create a Frankenstein face on your glass using a dry erase marker, or you can use clear plastic cups with a Sharpie. Wet the rim of the glass with water and then dip glass into a bowl of chocolate sprinkles for Frankie’s black hair. Then pour in your green smoothie. Our favorite green smoothie contains a banana, 3/4 cup pineapple, a couple of handfuls of spinach, 1/4 cup Greek yogurt, and orange juice.
Spiders on a Log
Spread peanut butter onto celery sticks and then press chocolate chips into the peanut butter. To create the legs, I used melted chocolate chips that I put into a plastic bag with the tip cut off and piped onto the celery sticks.
Spooky Eyeball Spaghetti
This is a perfect meal to serve on Halloween night! Again with this recipe, you can switch up the ingredients to fit your family’s taste preference. I used spinach-kale noodles, but you could also use regular noodles and dye them using food coloring! I sliced up the string cheese to make small circles. To make the iris of the eye, I used a straw to cut the olives into smaller circles. If you’re not a fan of olives, you could substitute with zucchini or a green bell pepper.
Most of these Halloween treats you can whip up using ingredients and supplies you already have at home! I have found that my kids are excited to eat healthy food options when they’re presented in a fun way.
