Why Apples Are the Superior Fall Flavor

It’s pumpkin spiced latte season.

I’ve heard all about it from my friends, but I’m here to tell you why apples are the superior fall flavor.

Apple Cider Doughnuts

Every year my family takes a day trip to Gays Mills, Wisconsin. I always have to pick up extra apple cider doughnuts. There are also several apple cider doughnuts you can find closer to home. (Find some ideas HERE!)

Apple Cider

No one can convince me that pumpkin spiced anything is better than a hot cup of delicious apple cider.

Here is my favorite apple cider recipe to enjoy on a chilly fall day:

  • ½ gallon of your favorite apple cider
  • ½ of caramel sauce
  • Cheesecloth
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  1. Pour apple cider into crockpot.
  2. Wrap cinnamon sticks up into cheesecloth and add to the cider.
  3. Cook on low for 2 and a half hours. Add caramel sauce, stir, and enjoy.
Apple Pie

What is more American than an apple pie? Biting into a scrumptious apple pie brings back memories of fall, Thanksgiving, and time spent with family. Here is an easy apple pie recipe.

Hard Drinks

Apples make better hard ciders. There is also hard apple pie that will keep you nice and warm while you are tailgating this fall.

Apples are so great, you don’t even need to cover up their flavor with anything. You can pick up an apple and just eat it. No one is doing that with a pumpkin.

Here are some other delicious fall treats to enjoy:
  • Apple crisp
  • Apple muffins
  • Apple slushies
  • Applesauce or apple butter
  • Apple pancakes
  • Apple Oatmeal
  • Caramel apples
  • Apple fritters

Other reasons why apples are better….

Picking Apples

Going apple picking is a lot more fun than picking out pumpkins. Who doesn’t love walking down rows of apple trees and picking out the best apples? There are so many great orchards around the Cedar Rapids area that offer a whole apple picking experience.

Allen’s Orchard in Marion has apple picking, apple slushies, and bakery treats

Wilson’s Orchard in Iowa City has a “u-pick farm, bakery and market”

A nice apple candle smells way better than anything pumpkin scented.

There are so many varieties of apples. If you don’t like one kind, you can pick other varieties. You can taste test all the types and choose your favorites. Pumpkins just taste like pumpkins.
