Easy (Almost) Homemade Apple Pie

Everyone loves apple pie! If baking scares you, let me share a few hacks to make baking easier:  buy a pre-made pie crust and make a crumb topping! The result is like a combination of an apple crisp and an apple pie.

Baking apple pie is a fun tradition in my family.

To start, my grandpa picks us apples from his tree. We wash them and peel the apples. My little kids even help peel the apples. Then I let the older kids cut up approximately 6 cups of apples. We soak the apples in water and lime juice as they are cut up to help prevent browning. Warm the oven to 400 degrees.   I do not start our oven until the apples were peeled and cut. Next, drain, rinse and pat the slices dry.

We use this delicious filling recipe from Pillsbury.

Filling

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 6 cups thinly sliced peeled apples
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Place your pie crust in your pan. Follow directions on the box or the crust may rip. Pre-packaged dough tastes great and it is a lot less work!

Place apples on pie crust.  Next, add the crumb topping. I love the crumb topping so I actually doubled the recipe for our pie!

Crumb Topping (from recipe found here

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter

Mix all the ingredients until well blended. Softened, not melted butter works the best.

Now bake at 400 degrees for approximately 40-45 minutes.Once the filling starts bubbling, it is almost done.  I start checking my pie at 30 minutes because I like a little crunch to my apples.
