My Children, I Hope That Your World Is Better Than Mine

My sweet children, as I see you both grow and develop, I can’t help but hope and wonder about your future.

What will your personalities shape up to be?

What kind of adults will you grow into?

What experiences will you live?

What kind of world will await you?

You might not sense it right now, but there is a shift happening.

Society is changing. There is more awareness, more empathy. We are connected in ways we have never been before. I see these changes as a good thing. It gives me hope for the world you will soon inherit.

My Children, I Hope That Your World Is Better Than Mine

I hope you get to experience an empathetic world, one where people care for each other, where they respect each others’ individuality, where kindness precedes all. A world that lends a helping hand and provides support for the needy. A world that rejects ignorance.

I hope you get to love whom you want to love.

There is nothing more powerful than love. If you get to love without judgment, without breaking the law, without raising eyebrows, then your world is a much kinder place than now. Being able to love your family and friends freely, it will be the greatest gift the world can provide.

I hope you get to enjoy the beauty of nature, that you get to experience a society that values nature and human life.

Selfishness is not an option. I hope you see a world that pools resources, invests in the future, and changes their way of life to sustain life on Earth.  My hope for you is a world that puts sustainable practices over profit.

I hope you get to reap the benefits of your hard work.

People get paid fairly, treated with dignity, and humanity is valued. I hope for a world where your salary is influenced by performance and not by profit margin. Where a job is not more valuable than time with family. Where balance is actually achieved.

I hope you get to enjoy the simple moments; that after this pandemic, we remember that joy can be found in the company of family and in the support of your friends. That not having any plans and enjoying time at home is actually refreshing.

I hope you live in a society that remembers how valuable human interaction is.

I hope you get to fight for what is right, give a voice to the voiceless, and keep striving for a better world. I hope that the fight of the current generation does not come to an end, that you get to see what can be accomplished in numbers. That activism is an integral part of the community and the responsibility of everyone.

This year, when one of you turned one while the other will start pre-school, the world started to burn.

I hope this fire keeps burning in you to fight for what is right. I hope you get to live in a world where individuality is celebrated, where you learn from those that are different from you, where you value others’ cultures and appreciate others’ beauty.

I hope your world is better than mine.
