Taking Pride in PRIDE: Educational Resources for the Whole Family

June is Pride Month.

These days, it’s hard not to be personally connected to the LGBTQ+ community, either directly or indirectly. The community is far-reaching and a part of mainstream society in 2021. And not just in the news.

Whether it’s the availability of pride merchandise, advertising, or plotlines of your favorite movies and shows, pride is virtually everywhere.

Even though the message of love and acceptance is widespread, there’s still a lot left to learn, especially for the younger generations.

Taking Pride in PRIDE: Educational Resources for the Whole Family

Here is a list of some tools you can use to introduce or educate your little ones on the beauty that is PRIDE:

Books: Younger Children

Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love. A young boy breaks gender roles when he sees himself as a mermaid.

This Day in June by Gayle E. Pitman. This book is positively bursting with the colors of the rainbow and beaming with pride on every single page.

I am Jazz by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings. Jazz shares her story as a young transgender girl in a wholesome and touching way.

Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman. A wonderful way to normalize same-sex couples in the eyes of our littles.

Worm Loves Worm by J.J. Austrian. Not all weddings look the same. Worm and Worm prove that.

Books: Upper Elementary and Tweens

Be Amazing: A History of Pride by Desmond Is Amazing. A walk through the history of the LGBTQ+ community while inspiring uniqueness.

The Gender Wheel: A Story About Bodies and Gender for Everybody by Maya Christina Gonzales. A guide to understanding current binary gender in a kid-friendly way.

George by Alex Gino. Everyone sees George as a boy, but she knows she’s a girl. A coming-of-age story geared towards the middle school crowd.

Movies and Shorts

In a Heartbeat – YouTube. A boy literally loses his heart to his crush in this four-minute short that will give you all the feels.

Out – Disney+. Might be better suited for older viewers. A man switches places with his dog as he struggles to find a way to come out to his parents.

The Fosters – Freeform. This wholesome show depicts a blended, multi-racial family of a lesbian couple. Another title more appropriate for the teens in your life.

Steven Universe – AppleTV. This kid-friendly cartoon is filled with queer characters and depictions of same-sex relationships without focusing completely on sexuality and orientation plot lines.

For Parents

The Most Dangerous Year – Amazon Prime (rental). A documentary aimed at the parents who were at the forefront of transgender rights and the “bathroom bills”.

All in My Family – Netflix. Another documentary about a gay filmmaker and his upbringing with traditional Chinese parents.

Milk – Amazon Prime or Netflix. The story of Harvey Milk’s journey as the first openly gay politician.
