Simple Sewing: DIY Burp Cloths

Growing up, I always imagined that I would sew all of my kids’ Halloween costumes, make all the pretty blankets, and handmade dresses too. I’ve accepted that while I’m totally “my mother” in so many aspects, I am not the sew-er that she is.

It’s okay. I love my hot-glue gun. I’m over it.

That being said, these burp cloths are super easy – even I can make them!

I was gifted a handmade set when my older daughter was born and they were my favorite of any we had previously bought. They are soft from the flannel and practical with the use of the towel on one side. Plus, you can make them in any pretty design you’d like. Looking back on making these, I’m definitely calling myself the crazy-nesting-34 week pregnant lady with twins.

So here it is – the simplest sewing DIY Burp Cloths:

Beforehand, make sure to wash & dry materials to avoid shrinkage after everything is sewn together. Then, you are ready to start!

Step 1: Cut the flannel and towel to the same size. Mine were cut to about 17in x 8in.

Step 2: Place “pretty” sides together (although the towel probably doesn’t have a pretty side).

Step 3: Sew along the edge of the whole rectangle (leaving a small seem allowance). Leave part of one side open!

Step 4: Turn inside (right-side) out.

Step 5: Fold in un-sewn edge and sew around the whole rectangle again (very close to the edge this time).

Step 6: Wait for baby (babies) to arrive. Then feed them & wipe up spit-up all day, every day with your super cute burp cloths.

Let me know if you make these or have received these!
They’re the best baby shower gifts!

  1. I enjoy making burp cloths and receiving blankets along with tiny shirts for babies in the NICU. I need to get back in the groove of making them. Something made by hand seems so special.
