A Letter to the Class of 2029

My daughter just graduated kindergarten.

It was precious. It really was a sweet ceremony and I enjoyed it. However, the teacher shared a fun fact.

“Your children will graduate high school in 2029.”

First of all. IS THAT A YEAR?! Secondly, I refuse to picture my 6 year old graduating high school and heading off to college (most likely in her flying car)! Just, no.

But once I collected myself, I decided to channel my anxious energy in a letter to these soon-to-be first graders. The high school graduating class of 2029.

Letter to the class of 2029

Graduates, you did it!

You survived teachers, twitter (if it still exists), and tests. Now you’re on your way!

But before you go, here’s some advice from a mama who graduated 22 years ago. I know you’re in a different world now, but just take a listen to what I have to say.

Everywhere you look you are asked to compare. Compare what you’re wearing, going, doing, even eating with those you see on every screen. Don’t do it. Comparison will steal your joy and leave you drained. Just be comfortable with yourself, or as my friends and I used to say – you do you.

Money. It isn’t everything. I know what you’re thinking, it sounds hypocritical. We’ve been the ones telling you to study, get good grades, and work hard. So that ultimately you can study, get good grades, work hard, go to a good college, get a good job, and make good money. I want you to succeed and meet your goals, certainly. All I’m saying is, don’t miss your life and those precious people around you by chasing money.

While I’m on the subject of people – let’s talk relationships. Have them. Have them face to face. Some of my best memories in my life are NOT ONLINE, but sitting across a booth laughing and crying with friends and hours spent chatting on loved one’s couches. It’s the face to face memories that stick. Relationships are worth having, not with millions online, but with a few, in person. Trust me on this.

That reminds me. Dating, sex, and marriage. There’s a lot of options out there. I know. It’s personal, sensitive, and special. So, I won’t say much right now, except you are valuable. You are a valuable and precious person. You are not a transaction, a selfie that dissolves after a few seconds, or an online profile to critique. You are a person with thoughts and feelings, and you ought to be treasured.

Finally, don’t give up. Don’t stop speaking to what you believe in. Don’t stop fighting racial injustice. Keep choosing love over choosing sides. Don’t lose your courage. You grew up in a divisive time, but you are flipping the script. You can fix what we got wrong, and I can’t wait to see how you do it.

Letter to graduating class of 2029

Go on now, I’m sure your friends are waiting for you in their hover car.

I’m proud of you, I love you, and fly-drive safely.
