My daughter loves to be creative and do arts and crafts. After seeing pottery I’d made at a Girls’ Night Out at The Iowa Ceramics Center & Glass Studio, she decided she wanted to host her birthday party there! Cue 8 tween girls and a younger sister having a ball in all their making glory!
We started out the party with a little how-to demonstration led by our terrific instructor. Then the girls got straight to work. The example was a snake coil bowl, but each person was encouraged to make whatever they wanted! It was so neat to see each person’s vision come to life! Several girls used the snake coil as a base and then gave their bowls their own shape. Others made completely different creations based upon inspiration they got from completed projects displayed throughout the room.
The instructor was available to guide and help when needed, and she was so encouraging! If something wasn’t going quite right she helped them figure out a solution. Once their pottery was formed, it was time to paint on the glaze! There were lots of colors to choose from and the kids were even able to create their own colors, with help from the instructor!
The experience took about an hour and a half. Once the projects were done we left them to be fired. They were ready to pick up within a couple of weeks and were all boxed up together to make it easy for us to deliver them to her friends! Everyone had a great time, and even better, The Iowa Ceramics Center & Glass Studio took care of everything so I didn’t have to worry about prep or cleaning up! That’s a win in my book!

The Iowa Ceramics Center & Glass Studio offers birthday parties every Saturday! You can choose from two times: 10:30 a.m.-Noon or 2:00-3:30 p.m. (Check their website for confirmation.) You may also choose from three project types: glass bugs or aliens, snake/coil boils, or fantasy creatures/zoo animals. Their options offer plenty to choose from for girls or boys!
They also offer girl scout and boy scout badge workshops and adults-only parties after hours (BYOB) by appointment, including workplace team building/holiday parties!
