Snowman Selfies Saturday, Jan. 1 – Feb. 28 Anytime

Open To All Ages.  It’s Iowa, it’s going to snow! Get out and enjoy the great outdoors when the white stuff starts to fly this winter. Simply build yourself a snowman anytime there is snow on the ground. Snap a selfie with your snowman, give it a cool name and send it to tireland@cityofmarion.org. Please include your contact information and name for your cool snowman. Pictures will be posted to Marion Parks and Recreation’s Facebook page. Submissions will be eligible for a prize from a random drawing at the conclusion of the event.

Play, Music, and Fun (1-3 yrs. with Adult) Begins Wednesday, Jan. 5 9:30 am

Learn fun songs and fingerplays with your child. Introduce them to simple rhythm instruments in a fun group setting. This is a high-energy class with a concentration on motor skill activities. Wednesdays 1/5-2/9 9:30-10:15 am $39

Let’s Draw, Paint, and Sculpt  (5-12 yrs.) Thursday, Jan. 6th, 5:30 pm

This class has it all! Experiment with many different materials while learning lots of new techniques. Thursdays  1/6-2/10 5:30-6:30 pm $55

Children’s Painting (7-10 yrs.)Thursday, Jan. 6th 6:30 pm

Preschool Trail Trekkers at Indian Creek Nature Center Saturday, Jan. 8th 10 am

Investigate the wonders of water—snow and ice—in the winter. How does snow actually help plants and animals? Make sure to dress for the weather as we plan to spend time outside enjoying this beautiful season. For preschoolers with an adult. Dress for outdoor activities. Fee: Preschooler $4; Siblings (ages 0-2) and Adults are free.

Kids Day Winter Carnival at Sundown Mountain Sunday, Jan. 9th 

Join us Saturday, January 9th for our annual Kid’s Day Winter Carnival! Kids ages 11 & under will receive 40% OFF Lift Tickets, Rentals & Lessons. We’ll also have activities, serving hot cocoa and s’mores next to the bonfire and a special appearance from Olaf!

Polar Bear Necessities Tuesday, Jan 11 1:30 pm

There is no school today so hang out with Alicia at Hiawatha Public Library. We will make a Cotton Ball Polar Bear and Melted Snowman S’mores. This program is for kids 0-8 and their caregivers.

Hibernation Station Wednesday, Jan 12, 10 a.m. Wikiup Learning Center

Children enjoy a story and activities based on the monthly theme. This month we talk about what our Iowa reptiles are doing under the cold ground and how they survive during the winter. Ages 3-6, but younger and older siblings are welcome. Cost: $3/child.

Harlem Globetrotters Spread Game Tour Wednesday, Jan. 12 7 pm

The Harlem Globetrotters Spread Game Tour is a basketball event like no other held at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville. Ankle-breaking moves, jaw-dropping swag, and rim-rattling dunks are only some of the thrill you can expect from this fully modernized show. S’Mores and Sledding at Wantaee Park Thursday, Jan. 13th, 4 pm

Thursday, January 13, 4 p.m. Join us for a campfire gathering with s’more fixings, scavenger hunts, and crafts near the Red Cedar Lodge hill. If there is not enough snow to sled, we will take a hike through the prairie instead. No cost for the program but remember to register so there are enough s’mores for everyone!

Kid N Canvas Backpack Snowman Saturday, Jan 15th 10 am

*NEW Location, Edgewood Rd Hy-Vee, clubhouse 2nd floor. ** 12×12 Backpack Snowman Kid N Canvas classes are for kids about 8 to 16 years old. Join us at Hy-Vee (5050 Edgewood Rd NE Cedar Rapids, Iowa 5211) cafe on Saturday Morning at 10 am.

$20 per painting, please only 1 painter per ticket. https://cork-n-canvas-iowa.ticketleap.com/ All supplies (canvas, paints, brushes, and apron) are provided for you, but please on clothes that are ok to get paint on. The class lasts about 1 to 1.5 hrs; you can shop while the kids paint. Check-in at 9:45 am, painting starts at 10 am. 

125th Anniversary of the Cedar Rapids Library Saturday, Jan. 15 All Day

Join us at the Downtown and Ladd Libraries to celebrate the founding of the Cedar Rapids Public Library. There will be several activities and new exhibits to learn about the Library’s history.

Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Monday, Jan. 17 2:30 pm

Spend your school day off at Hiawatha Public Library and learn more about today’s holiday and the man who inspired it, Martin Luther King Jr. This program is for kids 9-12 years old.

Cedar Rapids Mom’s Mini Night Out at Board and Brush Tuesday, Jan. 18, 6 pm

Join us for a great night out learning the ins and outs of DIY with Board and Brush Hiawatha. This private event will feature their mini designs with a gallery loaded with over 250 design options for each guest to choose what they want to create. You will be instructed from start to finish, beginning with distressing, sanding, staining, demonstrations on special painting techniques…all the way through laying your stencils and picking the colors YOU want that coincide with your personal home decor color schemes. Our fun environment filled with great music smells of wood, laughter from friends, delicious beverages, and step-by-step instructions are reserved just for Cedar Rapids Moms Group. Seating is very limited, reserve your spot today.

Walk in the Park Series: Almost Full Moon Owl Walk Tuesday, Jan 18 6 pm

Join us as we learn about some of the common owls of Iowa. We will see a variety of mounted owls and learn about what makes them “nature’s perfect mousetraps.” View wings and talons, owl pellets, and more before we head down the trail to see if we can carry on a conversation with one of the locals. The full moon should be rising as we hike providing unique views, especially from the wetland at night. Cost: $1/child 16 and under or $2.50/ adult.

Eco- Explorer Friday, Jan 21, 10 am  Wikiup Learning Center

The Eco-Explorer programs foster compassion, curiosity, and trust with the natural world by giving participants space and time to fall in love with the outdoors. Eco-Explorer days may include exploring, outdoor skills, animal tracking, nature and sensory awareness, storytelling, plant and animal study, empowerment, and lots of fun and play! This is a drop-off program that encourages independence from the caregiver. We will meet out front by the kiosk near the parking lot at 10 a.m. for easy drop-off. Ages 5 – 9. Cost $10/child.

Pokemon Beadie Babies at the Library Saturday, Jan 22 10 am and 1 pm

Make a Pokémon beaded keychain at the Ladd Library at 10 am or the Downtown Library at 1 pm, or take it home to make later.

Ice-O-Rama Saturday Jan 29 10am

First stop: outside the 5th Avenue doors at the Downtown Cedar Rapids Library to make ice sculptures and tell stories. Next stop: into the Library to warm up and find a book to cozy up with at home.
