I’m a self-proclaimed thrift-store junkie. There is something that I find so satisfying about finding a good deal or a hidden treasure. “Vintage” and “nostalgic” is trendy right now, and I am here for it! Vintage denim and worn in sweatshirts are the cutest and the comfiest. Plus, as a mom I hate paying full price for stuff for kids that they will quickly outgrow or destroy! Below, you will find a list of my favorite thrifting locations in the area broken into categories of what I’ve had the best luck finding there.
Best for Thrifted Adult Clothes
Style Encore at 5300 Fountains Drive NE in Cedar Rapids
I am so tempted to gatekeep, but I had to include this store first because I am obsessed with it. They have the cutest clothes and lots of name brands at a fraction of the price you would pay if you bought them new. I have gotten some super cute clothes and shoes here. My latest score from here was a Kate Spade purse with the tags still on it! I haven’t shopped it yet, but they recently expanded into men’s clothing. I have also sold some things here, and the process is so much easier than normal consignment because they give you cash on the spot. 10/10 recommend
The Daisy at 102 16th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids
The daisy comes highly recommended and has close to five stars on Google and Yelp. The owner says that she has had a love for consignment shopping since she was a little girl. The daisy has been around since 1993 and offers a rotating selection of in-demand brands. They also have home decor!
Best for Thrifted Kids Clothes
Puddle Jumpers at 260 7th Ave in Marion
Puddle Jumpers is very selective about the consignment items that they accept, which makes it a lot more rewarding to shop there! They have everything really organized, which I appreciate from a thrift store. You can shop on their website because they post everything online, but if you’re like me and like to scour the racks – you are bound to leave with a bag full of stuff. I got my toddler a North Face coat here for a crazy good deal.
(I also recommend checking out Once Upon a Child in Coralville if you’re up for a drive!)
Best for Thrifted Teen Clothes
Platos Closet at 3647 1st Ave SE in Cedar Rapids
Plato’s closet is a great place to hunt for deals on name brands like Nike, Under Armour, Ugg, American Eagle and Lululemon. Be prepared to scour the racks, and you will find something super cute and trendy for teens! They have plus sizes and men’s, and are another store that buys items for cash on the spot. Be sure to check out their socials – they post a lot of looks on there and inspo!
Best for Thrifted Toys
Stuff Etc. at 252 Blairsferry Road in Cedar Rapids
The toy section here is huge, and the prices can’t be beat. My son is obsessed with cars right now, and I have gotten a ton of matchbox and hotwheels from here for him. They also have ride-on toys and large items like dollhouses and play kitchens/tool benches. Stuff Etc. has a lot more than just toys, the store is massive – but the toy section is my family’s favorite part.
Best for Thrifted Outdoor Gear
SOKO Outfitters at 41 16th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids
Most of you probably already know that SOKO Outfitters in the Czech Village offers an amazing selection of new and name brand outdoor gear… but did you know they offered consignment!? If you are a mom who lives in activewear (umm… parenting is an athletic feat if you ask me), this is the consignment selection for you.
Best for *Vintage*
Found and Formed at 65 16th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids
This funky and fun shop is a local favorite for a reason. They have the most unique vintage and handmade finds. One of the most exciting things about this store is that they have PLUS SIZE VINTAGE CLOTHING. That in itself is phenomenal for the plus size girlies who know how rare that is to find! They offer a handful of handmade selections alongside their charismatic vintage options.
In addition to what I’ve listed here, it’s always beneficial to check out Facebook Marketplace. Not only is thrifting better for the environment, but it is fun too! You can find unique items that nobody else will have! I love the “hunt” and thrifting and finding a good deal is so exciting to me! Where are your favorite places for thrifting?!
