Your Guide to Thrifting in Cedar Rapids

I’m a self-proclaimed thrift-store junkie. There is something that I find so satisfying about finding a good deal or a hidden treasure. “Vintage” and “nostalgic” is trendy right now, and I am here for it! Vintage denim and worn in sweatshirts are the cutest and the comfiest.  Plus, as a mom I hate paying full price for stuff for kids that they will quickly outgrow or destroy! Below, you will find a list of my favorite thrifting locations in the area broken into categories of what I’ve had the best luck finding there.

Best for Adult Clothes

Style Encore at 5300 Fountains Drive NE in Cedar Rapids

I am so tempted to gatekeep, but I had to include this store first because I am obsessed with it. They have the cutest clothes and lots of name brands at a fraction of the price you would pay if you bought them new. I have gotten some super cute clothes and shoes here. My latest score from here was a Kate Spade purse with the tags still on it! I haven’t shopped it yet, but they recently expanded into men’s clothing. I have also sold some things here, and the process is so much easier than normal consignment because they give you cash on the spot. 10/10 recommend

Best for Kids Clothes

Puddle Jumpers at 260-7th Ave in Marion

Puddle Jumpers is very selective about the consignment items that they accept, which makes it a lot more rewarding to shop there! They have everything really organized, which I appreciate from a thrift store. You can shop on their website because they post everything online, but if you’re like me and like to scour the racks – you are bound to leave with a bag full of stuff. I got my toddler a North Face coat here for a crazy good deal.

(I also recommend checking out Once Upon a Child in Coralville if you’re up for a drive!)

Best for Teen Clothes

Platos Closet at 3647 1st Ave SE in Cedar Rapids

Plato’s closet is a great place to hunt for deals on name brands like Nike, Under Armour, Ugg, American Eagle and Lululemon. Be prepared to scour the racks, and you will find something super cute and trendy for teens! They have plus sizes and men’s, and are another store that buys items for cash on the spot. Be sure to check out their socials – they post a lot of looks on there and inspo!

Best for Toys

Stuff Etc. at 252 Blairsferry Road in Cedar Rapids

The toy section here is huge, and the prices can’t be beat. My son is obsessed with cars right now, and I have gotten a ton of matchbox and hotwheels from here for him. They also have ride-on toys and large items like dollhouses and play kitchens/tool benches. Stuff Etc. has a lot more than just toys, the store is massive – but the toy section is my family’s favorite part.

In addition to what I’ve listed here, it’s always beneficial to check out Facebook Marketplace. Not only is thrifting better for the environment, but it is fun too! You can find unique items that nobody else will have! I love the “hunt” and thrifting and finding a good deal is so exciting to me! Where are your favorite places for thrifting?!
