Cedar Rapids Moms’ Mini Night Out at Board & Brush in Hiawatha

Join us for a great night out learning the ins and outs of DIY with Board and Brush Hiawatha. This private event will feature their mini designs with a gallery loaded with over 250 design options for each guest to choose what they want to create. You will be instructed from start to finish, beginning with distressing, sanding, staining, demonstrations on special painting techniques…all the way through laying your stencils and picking the colors YOU want that coincide with your personal home decor color schemes. Our fun environment filled with great music smells of wood, laughter from friends, delicious beverages, and step-by-step instructions are reserved just for Cedar Rapids Moms Group. Owl Hike and Call Building at Wikiup Hill Learning Center

“Who cooks for you?” asks the barred owl. We will learn about owls in Iowa initially and participants will build owl calls to take home after the event. Then we will head out onto the trails to talk to the owls and attempt to call one in. Cost is $5/adult, $2/child 16 and under. One call is included for each adult registrant. Additional calls can be purchased for $5 each the night of the program.

Ice Fishing with TAKO!

The winter season is upon us and that means that it’s time to hit the ice, “Beat the Bitter” and search for fish! Take a Kid Outdoors will help kick off North Liberty’s Beat the Bitter for our annual Ice Fishing Event. Volunteers will be on hand to help you learn the basics of ice fishing, safety, equipment needs, techniques, and fish ID. Free lunch included! This is a wonderful opportunity for kids and adults alike to enjoy the outdoors. Parking is available at the Park and Rec Center as well as some limited on street. Dress for the weather and pack layers! A limited number of fishing poles will be available; please bring yours if you have one. This event is FREE and OPEN to the public. DONATIONS are always WELCOMED and greatly appreciated as we rely on people like you to keep these events free to all! Who Needs a Fishing License? All anglers 16 years and older must have a fishing license to fish Iowa waters. Anglers under the age of 16 may fish Iowa waters without a fishing license and may fish for and keep their own limit of fish, except when fishing for trout they must share their limit with a licensed adult or buy their own trout fee to keep their own limit of trout.

Take and Make Series: Owl Call at Wikiup Hill Learning Center

During the winter, barred owls are a chatty bunch. They call to communicate and to determine territory boundaries. With an owl call, you can also talk to other animals. We put together a kit that allows you to construct your very own owl call. Kit includes assembly instructions to put the call together and within a few minutes after gluing, you too can call barred owls! With luck, those in your neighborhood will be interested in a conversation with you. Who cooks for you – who cooks for you all? Leave a note with your registration if you need an alternative pick-up time. Cost: $5/kit.

Just a Walk in a Park Series: Full Moon Owl Hike at Wanatee Park

Join us at Meadowlark Shelter at Wanatee Park to learn about some of the common owls of Iowa. We will see a variety of mounted owls and learn about what makes them “nature’s perfect mousetraps.” View wings and talons, owl pellets, and more. Participants will then head down the trail to see if we can carry on a conversation with an owl. The full moon should be rising as we hike which will make for some nice viewing opportunities. Cost: $1/child 16 and under or $2.50/ adult.
Full Moon Hike at Jones Park

Explore Jones Park by the light of a full moon. Take a short hike at an easy pace and – if you’re lucky – see deer, owls, and other creatures of the night. Dress warm and be prepared to hike in the snow.

Corridor Running Freezefest 5k 2022 Wanatee Park

Join Corridor Running for this, the 21st running of the Freezefest 5k at Wanatee Park in Marion, IA. The Freezefest 5k race has become a traditional “must-run” event for Eastern Iowans.
If you are ready to shake off the cabin fever and get out and hit the roads for a fun 5K, registration is opening soon! There is limited parking available in the park, and we have to cap entries to the first 450 people registered. Sign up early and you’ll get a spectacular long sleeve ultra-soft shirt or hoodie, a custom race bib, food, drink, great music, and a chance at a ton of door prizes.
Iowa Civil Rights Exhibit at Hiawatha Public Library

Come see the Iowa Civil Rights Exhibit at the library from February 22-March 8. This exhibit is on loan from the African American Museum of Iowa.
Explore the struggles and triumphs of the fight for equal rights. Featured individuals include Alexander Clark, the man who helped desegregate Iowa schools in 1868, and Edna Griffin, the woman who led sit-ins at the Katz Drugstore in Des Moines in 1948.
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood at Paramount Theatre

Now you can catch Daniel Tiger “Live” on the Daniel Tiger Tour. “Won’t you be my neighbor?” Daniel Tiger and all of his friends from the beloved PBS KIDS television series are hopping aboard Trolley to your town with DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD LIVE! Along with “O” the Owl, Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday, Mom and Dad Tiger, and many more, Daniel Tiger will take live audiences on an interactive musical adventure to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, sharing stories of friendship, helping others, and celebrating new experiences. This live theatrical production filled with music, dancing, laughter, and “grr-ific” surprises will warm the hearts of multiple generations.
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood has been rescheduled for February 24, 2022. Previously scheduled dates include March 17, 2020, and Saturday, February 23, 2021. Tickets to either the March 17, 2020 performance OR February 23, 2021, will be honored for the new date.

Twist, Tie, and Dye! At Wickiup Hill Learning Center

Are you DYEING to get a little color in your life? Join us for a chance to tie-dye to create a wearable work of art! Participants are asked to bring their own items to dye (all-cotton items, limit of 2 items per participant, nothing larger than a t-shirt). Because of the dye used, for ages 12 and older. Super Hero Night at Iowa Children’s Museum

Join us for a special night for families with children with special needs on the last Sunday of every month from 6-7:30 pm. Every child is unique. Each grows and learns in their own way. And without exception, all children love to play. Children with special health or sensory needs are no different! During Super Hero Nights, admission is free for families with children who have special needs thanks to our friends at GreenState Credit Union.
