Mom’s Guide to Cedar Rapids Family Events in February


February 1st-3rd

Friday-Sunday, February 1-3: Enchanted Tale Series – Lilo & Stitch | multiple showings @ Marcus Wehrenberg Cedar Rapids Cinema

Join us for the second film of our Enchanted Tales Series – – Lilo & Stitch. A tale of a young girl’s encounter with the galaxy’s most wanted extraterrestrial. Lilo is a lonely Hawaiian girl who adopts a small ugly ‘dog,’ whom she names Stitch. Stitch would be the perfect pet if he weren’t in reality a genetic experiment who has escaped from an alien planet and crash-landed on earth. Through her love, faith and unwavering belief in “ohana” (the Hawaiian concept of family), Lilo helps unlock Stitch’s heart and gives him the one thing he was never designed to have–the ability to care for someone else.

Friday, February 1: Bowl for Kids’ Sake | 5:00-8:00 p.m. @ Cedar Rapids Bowling Center

Have fun and raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring by bowling in February!

Friday, February 1: Friday Movie Night | 6:30-8:30 p.m. @ Hiawatha Elementary PTO

Hiawatha families, please join us for Family Movie Night as we watch the adventures of a YETTI who is convinced that the elusive creatures known as “humans” really do exist. The movie is FREE, and students are encouraged to bring blankets or something else to sit on. Concessions will be available. Doors open at 6, and the movie starts at 6:30. Students must attend WITH an ADULT; no drop-offs. Friday, February 1 is also Spirit Day at Hiawatha Elementary. Students and adults are invited to wear school colors (Red & White) or school logo-wear.

Saturday, February 2: Kids Paint Class – Mermaid #2  | 9:00-10:30 a.m. @ Artwork by Julia Kulish (4198 Pikeview Dr, Center Point)

*SOLD OUT* Kids get creative! This is a fun step by step instructional class for kids ages 7-12 (exceptions on ages can be made, email for more details – julskul@msn.com) . All art supplies are provided – kids just come, create, and we clean up the mess! Tickets: $20/child

Saturday, February 2: Kid N Canvas | 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. @ Hy-Vee (Collins Rd)

Kid N Canvas classes are for kids 8 to 16. Join us at Hy-Vee (279 Collins Rd NE Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402) cafe on Saturday Morning 10 am. $20 per painting, please only 1 painter per ticket. All supplies (canvas, paints, brushes and apron) are provided for you, but please on clothes that are ok to get paint on. Class lasts about 1.5 to 2 hrs. Hy-Vee is providing a $10 gift card (per ticket) to shop with while your kids are painting. Check in at 9:45 am, painting starts at 10 am.

Saturday, February 2: Once Upon a Saturday | 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. @ The Iowa Children’s Museum

Hear ye! Hear ye! All ye kings and queens, knights and nobles, dragons and fairies… it is by decree of The Iowa Children’s Museum that you’re invited to Once Upon a Saturday on Saturday the second day of February in the year two thousand and nineteen. When the clock strikes the 10th hour in the morning, the celebration shall begin! Join us for a magical day full of costumes and special activities throughout the museum. All activities are included with daily admission.

Saturday, February 2: Karla Manternach – Book Reading | 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. @ Anamosa Library

Karla Manternach is an Anamosa native who will be at the library to do a reading from her new book, “Meena Meets Her Match”. Meena’s life is full of color until her best friend deserts her and a trip to the hospital changes her life. Can Meena make something beautiful out of a scary time? Come listen to part of her story and do a Valentine craft, followed by a book signing.

Saturdays, February 2-March 6: Just Right for Me! Teen | 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. @ Theatre Cedar Rapids

TCR’s “Just Right for ME!” youth theatre class is specially geared toward students on the autism spectrum. This class is specifically targeted toward children ages 14+. Each class is designed to provide a safe environment for creative expression, facilitate social connections, offer students models for developing and practicing social skills through theatre and story dramatization, and most importantly teaching how the magic of theatre is FUN. As an added bonus, an informal “Just Right for ME!” parent discussion group will commence during the class times in the Hedges Library. Cost: $120

Saturdays, February 2-March 6: Youtheatre!: Future Show Choir Stars (ages 7-9) | 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. @ Theatre Cedar Rapids

Youtheatre! is back with a show choir focus and we can’t wait to meet your student! In this class, kids will learn basic show choir performing techniques that will help them pursue their passion. They will work on singing, dancing, and how to convey a character through song and dance – all fundamental elements of both show choir and musical theatre performance. Bring your jazz hands! This is class is specifically geared toward students ages 7 to 9 years old. Cost: $120

Saturdays, February 2-March 6: Just Right for Me! Pre-Teen | 1:00-2:30 p.m. @ Theatre Cedar Rapids

Saturday, February 2: CoderDojo |  1:00-3:00 p.m. @ NewBo Co K-12 Education

CoderDojo is a free K-5 STEAM program by NewBoCo K-12 Education that encourages creativity, fosters entrepreneurship, and helps kids learn to code. Attendees are welcomed at 1 pm and everyone is given the details on what stations are available that day. This is an opportunity for kids to explore technology, coding, critical thinking at various entry levels. You can always expect several computer science options that range from Code.org‘s Hour of Code to database development, web development, or custom projects to help kids learn a new skill. Stations may include a varitey of robotics, VR, app development, HTML, intro to coding, circuitry, engineering challenges and more!

Sundays, Ongoing: Art Adventure: Clay Play! | 2:00-3:30 p.m. @ The Iowa Children’s Museum

Art Adventure: Clay Play! is a workshop held every Sunday from 2:00 – 3:30 PM in the Art Studio. Clay Play gives all those budding artists out there an opportunity to sculpt, squish, pound and create with different types of clay. This drop-in workshop is included with museum admission and facilitated by a museum PLAYologist.


February 8th-10th

Friday-Sunday, February 8-10: Enchanted Tale Series – Tangled | multiple showings @ Marcus Wehrenberg Cedar Rapids Cinema

Join us for the third film of our Enchanted Tales Series – – Tangled! When the kingdom’s most wanted — and most charming — bandit Flynn Rider hides out in a mysterious tower, he’s taken hostage by Rapunzel, a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. Flynn’s curious captor, who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an over-protective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs. “Tangled” is a story of adventure, heart, humor and hair — lots of hair.

Friday, February 8: 2019 Daddy/Daughter & Mother/Son Dance | 6:30-8:30 p.m. @ Ushers Ferry Historic Village

Come enjoy a magical evening for dads and daughters and/or mothers and sons. Put on formal attire for a special dinner and dance. At the event, each couple will get their photo taken by Halverson Photography, have a dinner by Dostal Catering, receive a gift bag and chocolate rose, be entertained by a magician, and enjoy a night of dancing with DJ Chris.  You won’t want to miss this great event! We sell out fast every year, so don’t wait to get your tickets.

Saturday, February 9: Hi-Crew Valentine’s Pancake Breakfast | 8:00-11:00 a.m. @ Hiawatha Community Center

Do you like pancakes and omelets? Then join us February 9th from 8-11 AM for our annual Valentine’s Day Pancake Breakfast! Free will donation! Help us support children in our community.

Saturday, February 9: February Code Plus Plus |  9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. @ NewBo Co K-12 Education

Code++ is a one day event to teach 8th-12th grade students about programming. The beginner group will learn HTML and CSS to build their own website. Students with prior HTML and CSS experience may choose to add JavaScript to their skills in the advanced group. They will also learn about careers in computer science. A light breakfast and lunch will be included. Scholarships are available.

Saturday, February 9: Music on the Move | 9:15-10:00 a.m. or 10:15-11:00 a.m. @ Baby Time

Join us for Music on the Move Family Class at 9:15 or 10:15 am. Please RESERVE your seat online. Sing, play, listen, laugh, move, learn and bond with your little one (baby – preschooler). We will have fun each week tickling our senses while playing with (learning!) music, language, motor, and pre-academic skills. Lisa is a board-certified music therapist – all children are welcome!

Saturday, February 9: Parent & Kids Cookie Baking Class  | 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. @ Groundswell Cafe, Coworking & Events

Kiddos and parents connect though a interactive cookie making class themed around Valentines Day. In this class you will use Chef Green & Co’s pre-made sugar cookie Dough to create Heart Shaped cookies, bake them, decorate them & take home to enjoy! Each Child and Adult member duo will get enough dough to make 1 dozen cookies. All supplies included (Parents bring an apron if you have one). This class is for one child and one parent, you can purchase add -ons for an additional child or parent + 1/2 dozen extra cookies! $28 for parent & 1 child additional child or parent $9 each

Saturday, February 9: Preschool Trail Trekkers: Birds   | 10:00-11:00 a.m. @ Indian Creek Nature Center

Explore the fascinating world of our feathered friends and go bird watching with a naturalist. Take a peek at our collection of bird nests and colorful feathers while you learn about their songs, characteristics and habitats. Registration encouraged. Free. For preschoolers with adult.

Saturday, February 9: Valentine’s Day Activities   | 10:00-11:30 a.m. @ Cedar Rapids Pulic Library (Downtown)

You are invited to the Downtown Library for a fun Valentine’s Day event for children and their families. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with crafts, refreshments and heart healthy dancing.

Saturday, February 9: Glass Flower Magnets | 2:00-3:30 p.m. @ Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio

This is a great way for kids and parents alike who are interested in creating in the studio. Create two colorful flower magnets in this workshop using warm glass techniques. Cost is $20. Kids 8 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult. 

Sunday, February 10: Valentine’s Day Celebration | 12:00-5:00 p.m. @ The Play Station

Looking for a fun way to celebrate Valentines Day with the kids? The Play Station Valentines Celebration Party will include cookie decorating, arts/crafts, face painting, and balloon twisting! Admission: $9.99 ages 1-15 (adults are free)

Sunday, February 10: Kids Cookie Decorating Course  | 1:00-2:00 p.m. @ Sweetly Grace, Marion

This course is designed as an introductory course for children 6+ to decorate Valentine’s Day themed cookies! We will go over the basics for piping icing, outlining/flooding cookies, using Royal icing transfers and more! Parents are encouraged to stay for this class but it is not required. I am a former 4th Grade Teacher and feel very confident in teaching students the basic steps/skills needed for sugar cookie decorating.


February 15th-17th

Friday-Monday, February 15-18: Enchanted Tale Series – Beauty and the Beast | multiple showings @ Marcus Wehrenberg Cedar Rapids Cinema

Join us for the final film of our Enchanted Tales Series – – Beauty and the Beast. An arrogant nobleman is turned into a beast and, in order to break the spell, he tries to win the love of a village girl.

Friday, February 15: Tiger Workshop: The Sky is the Limit | 7:00-8:30 p.m. @ Indian Creek Nature Center

Use binoculars and telescopes, and talk about constellations, how to use star charts, and more. Create your own constellation and give it a name! (You will be responsible for Requirement #3). Fee: $5.00 per Parent Chaperone, $10.00 per Scout.

Saturday, February 16: Junior Workshop: X Marks the Spot | 9:00-11:00 a.m. @ Indian Creek Nature Center

Come to a geocaching event to learn how the Global Positioning System (GPS) works. Learn to enter waypoints in a GPS receiver and find a geocache! Make a trade item to leave in a cache. Bring your own GPS unit or borrow one of the Nature Center’s units. We’ll visit a geocache website. This completes most of the Geocache badge. Fee: $5.00 per Parent Chaperone, $10.00 per Scout.

Saturday, February 16: Studio Experience: Clay Birds and Glass Bugs | 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. @ Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio

This is a project oriented class intended to expose students to both clay and warm glass in our studio. Participants will make a clay project (hand building using slabs and pinch pot techniques) and a warm glass project. You will get both group and personal instruction. This is a great way for kids and parents alike to try both clay and warm glass in one session. Clay, glass, tools, firing, and instruction from our knowledgeable staff are included. All skill levels welcome.  Projects will be available for pickup 2-3 weeks later. Cost is $35. Minimum age is 9 years old. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Saturday, February 16: Brownies and Juniors Workshop: Citizen Science Sampler | 12:30-2:30 p.m. @ Indian Creek Nature Center

Learn about what scientists do and see how you can do science in your own backyards and communities by participating in a sampler of citizen science projects. Go on a hike to observe the phenology of the seasons, observe birds as a part of the Great Backyard Bird count or help us monitor water quality. Fee: $5.00 per Parent Chaperone, $10.00 per Scout.

Saturday, February 16: CoderDojo |  1:00-3:00 p.m. @ NewBo Co K-12 Education

Sunday, February 17: Clover Kids Project Overload Day |  1:00-3:00 p.m. @ ISU Extension and Outreach – Linn County

Join us for 4 fun, hands-on sessions! We’ll explore some of the most popular project areas in Linn County 4-H Clover Kids. Develop your skills and learn something new. You’ll even leave with some projects ready (or almost ready) to exhibit at the fair! Cost is $10 per youth (includes project materials & snacks) Space is limited so sign up today!


February 22nd-24th

Friday, February 22: Doodlebugs: Ouch! | 10:30 a.m. @ Hiawatha Public Library w/ Cedar Rapids Museum of Art

Boo-boos feel so much better with a kiss and a Band-Aid, don’t they? After our story, we’ll use some adhesive bandages as stickers in an art project you can take home. Doodlebugs is a free preschool series for families, but if you have a daycare or school group, contact us about setting up a private Doodlebugs class designed just for you!

Friday, February 22: STEM Family Free Night | 5:00-8:00 p.m. @ The Iowa Children’s Museum

Admission is free to all visitors from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the last Friday of every month sponsored by Collins Aerospace. Help solve a unique Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math challenge in the STEM Studio focused on problem-based learning.

Saturday, February 23: Music on the Move | 9:15-10:00 a.m. or 10:15-11:00 a.m. @ Baby Time

Saturday, February 23: Bird in a Nest | 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. @ Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio

This is a great way for kids and parents alike who are interested in creating in the studio. Think Spring! Make your favorite bird from clay (and paint it) while also creating a cozy nest for it to sit in with some eggs! Cost is $18. Kids 8 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult. 

Saturday, February 23: Clay Coral Reef | 2:00-3:30 p.m. @ Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio

This is a great way for kids and parents alike who are interested in creating in the studio. Let’s go underwater and sculpt a beautiful creation only found under the sea. Cost is $18. Kids 8 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult. 

Sunday, February 24: Corridor Skates | 1:00-3:00 p.m. @ City of Ely

Make your way over to the Ely Ice Rink on Sunday February 24th from 1:00-3:00pm for an afternoon of hockey and skating! Members of the Cedar Rapids Hockey Association, the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena and Rough Riders Hockey have organized a FREE mobile skate unit for the first time ever; and Ely is their debut stop of the season! Nearly 60 pairs of youth skates and a variety of sticks and pucks WILL BE PROVIDED. Participants MUST bring their own helmet in order to skate during the designated hours of the event. (Bike helmets are ok). If you have your own skates, you are encouraged to bring them. Parents will also need to sign a wavier at the start of the event so please make sure a guardian is present. Surprise special guests may include local Rough Riders, members of the Cedar Rapids High School Hockey Team as well as other adult league players! Thank you to all partners that are making this event possible!
