Before I became a mom, I used to have the time to hunt for unique gifts and special trinkets that I could group together in a beautiful basket. These days, I’m lucky if I remember to buy a gift a day prior to the event.
Whether it’s a holiday present or a hostess gift, I try to put together something that celebrates our community and highlights local talents and flare.
This year, a few special boutiques are newcomers for the Corridor holiday shopping season. From interesting home décor items to beautiful apparel, here are a few of places featuring a well-curated variety of gifts. These places will be my “go-to” spots for shopping this holiday season.
Dot & Dash Boutique (NewBo)
Do you ever feel like you’re playing roulette when you’re buying clothes online? What will the material be like? Is that shirt going to flatter my figure? When I found out that Cedar Rapids was about to open a brand-new clothing boutique, I was ecstatic. I was even more excited when I saw the collection. The clothes are adorable, affordable and made with quality materials. If you see my husband, tell him a gift certificate to Dot & Dash would look good in my stocking.
Scout (Marion)
Scout is one of those stores I would love to bring my sister to when she visits from Chicago. See? We have cool stores here in Iowa, and this is one of them. Scout is an awesome spot to pick out a gift for your stylish mom or best friend that enjoys cooking. You’ll find items at an assortment of price points and interests. Open Tuesday-Saturday. Check online for store schedule.
Mix Home Mercantile (North Liberty)
Newly opened in December 2019, this store has been on my radar all fall as I’ve witnessed construction crews entering into the storefront. Created by local interior designer, Emily Hughes, this store focuses on providing vintage, modern & homemade home goods. I don’t think one can own too many pillows or enough beautiful candles, so this store will certainly appear on my credit card statement.
Home Decor by Manchester (Coralville)
Conveniently located on 5th in Coralville, this is the place to visit if you need a gift basket for your boss or a special someone. Imagine a beautiful basket full of gourmet treasures wrapped to perfection. Ever see a beautiful purse intended to carry a bottle of wine? Looking to bring a special serving platter? Visit Home Décor by Manchester to check out these items and a plethora of silk florals, gourmet food and more.
Sidekick Coffee & Books (Iowa City)
There’s something nostalgic and romantic about grabbing coffee and looking through books. Books are also a great gift, especially if it discusses a topic that’s near and dear to the recipient’s heart. Sidekick Coffee opened on Melrose, right down the street from West High School. This beautiful store offers a wonderful collection of unique books, especially a fantastic variety of children’s titles. Grab a delicious coffee, pastry, or ice cream and enjoy a little storytime with your purchase!
Pretty Lane (Cedar Rapids)
I will be the first to admit that I’ve watched a few makeup application videos on YouTube and Instagram. Unfortunately, I had a difficult time trying to duplicate looks with drugstore cosmetics and ended up donating a few “too pink” lipsticks along the way. When Pretty Lane opened, I was thrilled to discover that they make makeup that’s affordable, easy to apply and cruelty-free. I instantly fell in love. Need some additional beauty recommendations or know someone that needs a perfect makeup bag? The gals of Pretty Lane have you covered with an assortment of their favorite beauty finds available at their storefront.
Moxie + Mortar (Solon)
Handpicked décor, jewelry, kick knacks….and wine? Yes, please! This store looks like it bloomed from the imagination of Joanna Gaines herself. It’s a great environment to relax, get ideas, shop and most importantly- sip! I can’t wait to see what the storefront looks like with a little holiday flare.
I hope you’ll think about shopping local this season and try out one of these new boutiques! Know some others we should check out? Leave the details in the comments!
