As a mom, it’s important to me to think about how the choices I make affect my kids every day, as well as how those choices affect their future. How can I make sure that the things I buy promote not only their health, but that of the environment they are growing up in?
As parents we think about this when it comes to the food, clothing, and personal care products we purchase. But what about the fuel we use in our vehicles?
I was excited to learn that E15 fuel uses 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline. Ethanol is made from corn and is the cheapest and cleanest form of octane in the world. More ethanol means less petroleum-based cancer-causing chemicals in the air. It also means less greenhouse gases. Each year global ethanol use and production reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 110 million metric tons, the equivalent of taking 20 million cars off the road.
Wow! That’s a win for the environment, for sure. But what about my vehicle?
Studies have shown that E15 delivers the same gas mileage as E10 (the most widely used fuel in America), and also has a higher octane rating than E10 (88 vs 87). E15 has been approved for use in all cars, SUVs, and light-duty trucks years 2001 and newer.
Even better? E15 is easier on my wallet, which is great news with a van full of kids! E15 sells for 5-10 cents cheaper than E10 and saves me money every time I fill up!
