My birthday is on October 31st. All my life my birthday has been shared with the happy trick or treaters, and now that I’m an adult, I can more clearly see the pros and cons of having a Halloween birthday.
Pros of a Halloween Birthday
1. Candy!!!
This one is pretty self-explanatory. My kids get tons of candy and of course, they share with me because it’s my birthday. It’s a really sweet gesture (no pun intended) on my kids’ part and it makes me feel good to see them being kind.
2. Seeing my kids so happy
The kids aren’t necessarily happy because it’s my birthday, but they are excited to go trick or treating. It doesn’t really matter to me what the exact reason is, but I can always count on my kids to be really excited and giddy on Halloween. It is a real treat and maybe the best birthday “present” I could ever ask for.
3. My family tries to give me the best birthday possible
Because I share my birthday with a holiday, all my life my family has put in a lot of effort to make me feel special and celebrated. Last year, I had a birthday lunch in the afternoon and that was a special time just for me. It was nice to feel so loved. When I was a kid, my parents threw these extravagant Halloween-themed birthday parties. My entire family would show up in their costumes and I got to celebrate both my birthday and Halloween at the same time!
Cons of a Halloween Birthday

Sharing a holiday
There’s no denying that my birthday is on a holiday. Underneath all the festivities and excitement, there’s always a little part of me that wishes I had a “regular” birthday. I never feel like the whole day is dedicated to me. Usually, it’s just a couple of hours that we actually celebrate my birthday. But I have to share the stage with the super fun and exciting Halloween.
2. Everyone is otherwise distracted with Halloween festivities
My kids are usually so excited to get dressed up and go trick or treating. Part of me is happy to see them so happy, but I wish I didn’t have to sacrifice my own birthday celebration in the process. It seems like I can only celebrate my birthday in the morning or maybe the early afternoon. Either way, I know deep down that I come second to the holiday that my birthday is on.
3. I can’t go out in the evening on my birthday because my kids are trick or treating
Normally someone would celebrate their birthday with a special dinner or something else fun in the evening. This isn’t an option for me because I want to see my kids trick or treating. Therefore, I have to do my celebrations earlier in the day. I’m thankful that I’m being celebrated at all, but I also recognize the limitations surrounding my birthday.
So there you go- these are my pros and cons I feel around my birthday! Overall it’s a lot of fun and never a boring day, which I am thankful for. I may desire to have a different birthday, but I think everything happens for a reason. I have accepted the truth about my birthday being on a holiday and I look forward to what my future birthdays look like!
