5 Ways to Celebrate Mothers Day in Quarantine

Mother’s Day is May 10th this year (that’s this Sunday, hint hint!) and it will certainly be a unique one.

Unfortunately, there won’t be brunches at restaurants and gatherings with grandmas. It’s really sad. I personally love spending Mother’s Day with my own mom and mother in law and I love it when they get to spend the day with their grandkids. Last year we all got together for brunch and spent the day just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful day.

But even if we won’t be able to celebrate how we originally planned this year, there are still lots of ways to make this day special and have some fun.

(If you’re a mom reading this right now, feel free to send this link to your kids or significant other!)

Celebrating Mothers Day in Quarantine

Have a Photo Shoot

Dress up if you’d like, head outside and take pictures WITH mom. You don’t need a professional photographer and you don’t need perfect photos. Just make it fun! Dad can take the pictures, have the kids take turns being the photographer, or prop your phone up and set the timer. Take silly pictures and get creative, just as long as Mom is in every photo.

Put Mom in Time Out

No, she’s not in trouble. But now more than ever, Mom probably just needs some time to herself to recharge. Give her a good book or magazine, a cup of coffee, some snacks, and send her to her room and let her relax all by herself for a couple of hours. (Bonus points if you do all of the laundry while she’s locked in her room!)

Go for a Drive

Does Mom just want to get out of the house? You could try one of these Scenic Drives around the Cedar Rapids area. Or enjoy the local art on the Murals and More Trail around town.

Take Mom on a Scavenger Hunt

Hide little gifts all over your house. They don’t have to be big or expensive. Make a card, a poem, her favorite snacks, some flowers, and kind of little trinkets. Then you can give her clues or a map to search around the house for all of her presents.

Shop Local

Many of the small, local businesses are still doing curbside pick-up or delivery. Here are some of my recommendations:

The most important part of the day is to just make Mom feel special and loved! It doesn’t have to cost a lot and it doesn’t have to be a lot of work.
