Dyeing to Have Some Fun!

Springtime is such a bright time of the year, especially when we get to celebrate Easter! There are so many bright and happy colors, so why not put those on some eggs to have a little fun?! Over the years I have used kits to dye Easter eggs, but sometimes we forgot to buy one or the store was out of stock. But now I have some neat and easy ways to dye eggs without having to buy a kit. The best part is, you probably have these few items in your kitchen already. Maybe you and your kiddos can try something new and fun this year!

Food coloring and vinegardye Easter eggs

What you need:

  • Food coloring
  • Vinegar

What to do:

  1. Boil a pot of water
  2. Add ½ cup of boiling water, 1 tsp of vinegar, and 10-20 drops of food coloring into a container/cup
  3. Let eggs sit in the mixture for a few minutes

Tip: For darker color, let eggs sit in the mixture longer. Let eggs sit in the mixture for just a minute or two for a lighter color. Use a spoon or whisk to put the eggs in and out of the mixture.

Jell-O and vinegar

What you need:

  • Jell-O packet
  • Vinegar

What to do:

  1. Boil a pot of water
  2. Add 1 cup of boiling water, 2 oz Jell-O powder, and 1 tbsp of vinegar into a container/cup
  3. Let eggs sit for a few minutes

Tip: The eggs can have a stickiness to them, but if they are not being eaten let them sit at room temperature for a while and it will go away and leave a nice shine. Due to the Jell-O setting as it cools, you must work kind of quickly and heat the mixture in the microwave often. Use a spoon or whisk to put the eggs in and out of the mixture.dying Easter eggs

Kool-Aid and vinegar

What you need:

  • Kool-Aid packet
  • Vinegar

What to do:

  1. Boil a pot of water
  2. Add ½ cup of boiling water, a Kool-Aid packet, and 1 tbsp of vinegar into a container/cup
  3. Let eggs sit in the mixture for a few minutes

Tip: The eggs will turn out more of a matte color and feel coarse, but you can rub a tiny drop of vegetable oil on the shell, and it will shine it right up! Use a spoon or whisk to put the eggs in and out of the mixture.

Shaving cream and food coloring

What you need:

  • Shaving cream
  • Food coloring

What to do:

  1. On a paper plate or container, spray in shaving cream and drip food coloring around the shaving cream
  2. Roll the egg around the surface
  3. Let the eggs dry and then remove any excess shaving cream

Tip: If you are planning on eating the eggs, use whipped cream instead of shaving cream!

Rice and food coloring

What you need:

  • Rice
  • Food coloring

What to do:

  1. On a paper plate or in a container, pour in the rice and drip food coloring on the rice
  2. Shake the egg around to coat it in food coloring

Tip: Mix colors for a speckled pattern. If you have younger kiddos, use a plastic baggie so they can shake it around without spilling the mixture.

Watercolor paint

What you need:

  • Watercolor paint set

What to do:

  1. Add water to the paint and let your kiddo’s imagination go wild!
I hope you have fun trying some of these easy ideas to dye Easter eggs!
